Accidents in Dorking

I read with interest about the accident on Saturday. To my knowledge, this is the fourth time in 12 months that a pedestrian has been knocked down in Dorking, and at least one of those people died.
Why so many? Is it the layout of the town that encourages people to cross without using proper crossings. It is very unfortunate, and I wonder if the road was closed for so long to allow the police to gather evidence of what happened.

  1. Very sad news that the 84 year old man that was seriously injured on Saturday morning after he was hit by a car on the high street has died in hospital. Our condolences go out to his immediate family. There are a number of reasons why there has been a series of accidents in the town centre recently. First of all, cars seem to use the high, south and west street as a grand prix circuit, ignoring zebra crossings, traffic lights and fail to indicate on a constant basis. Secondly, pedestrians are also to blame, as they cross in blind spots, walk in front of cars (especially on a Friday and Saturday nights) and fail to use the traffic lights and zebra crossing as a place to cross the road safely. Finally, Surrey County Council are to blame for a lot of the carnage in town as it takes an age to wait for the green man at West Street and other junctions like the one with mill lane and the high street are ill thought out and put the pedestrians life at risk! Also there should be an extra zebra crossing in south street as the last one is near Waitrose, as cars/lorries/motorcycles regularly break the speed limit and it is only a matter of time, before we read about another incident like the one that occurred on Saturday morning.

  2. Until the outcome is known there is no point in speculating whose fault it was. A lot of people are blaming the elderly gentleman for crossing near the Lemon Tree shop to get to the Sainsburys side without the aid of a traffic light. Saying that Danielle is spot on as it seems that 50% of the cars in the evening in Dorking exceed the speed limit whilst talking on their mobile, pedestrians continually cross without looking, talking on their mobiles and Surrey CC continually think of more ways to make Dorking hazardous for the pedestrian and the car driver.
