I wish 'Jamie of Dorking' well in his efforts to get a new warm and friendly blog about the town up and running, but if all he wants is to discuss how beautiful the town is (and I agree that Dorking can be a delight), where he can get a cup of coffee or a glass of wine, why not get hold of a copy of one of the excellent little freebie publications that are regularly distributed in pubs and shops?
Yes there is a lot of moaning on this site (as there was on the old site) about what's happening in Dorking and the failings of the local council, understandable really because there is a lot going wrong, the ever growing number of empty shops bear witness to that.
Every empty shop in the town almost certainly represents a disaster for many of the smaller shopkeepers who sunk their money and labour into trying to keep their business going. Yesterday I read the notice on the door of the closed music and dance shop in South Street - everyone should go and read those very sad words.
So, Jamie, while I wish you every possible success with the blog, don't moan too much about the people who are using this blog to try and bring about change for the better in Dorking, as they did with the old blog; probably they will not succeed, but it's better to try and fail than simply pretend that all is well.

newbie here, it's not obvious how to start a discussion thread as opposed to a comment on this blog? I just noticed the traffic lights at pump corner yesterday and wanted someone local to explain them to me? How come there is a set of lights pointing up south street?? This is one way going away from the lights no?? Seems like a waste of money on top of the original waste of putting lights there in the first place. Besides, sadly another old lady was killed on the roads of dorking yesterday, so the problem seems to be getting worse not better??
ReplyDeleteHello newbie, hopefully I can help. Look at the top right hand corner of the page, and left click on the "sign in" button. When you have done that a new page comes up offering box to sign in, enter into that box the following: peopleofdorking@hotmail.com
ReplyDeleteA second box asks for the password, enter: blogblog
With a bit of luck you'll then be taken to a page that invites you to create a new posting. Hope it works out OK.
As you accurately observe the lights at Pump Corner are a dreadful muddle brought about by SCC's hopeless and hapless Highways Department who seem to regard Dorking as a suitable area for pointless experiments - remember Pixham Lane.
I was extreemly sad to learn of the death of yet another elderly person on Dorking's roads.

Hi Pepin. Thanks for your feedback all i want with a new blog is the most simple form of posting comments on Dorking as i and others do find this blog a bit tricky in posting. I will keep it maintained with subjects as much as i can but would also like to invite others to post whatever they wish in all threads. if you want to support it please can you try once more going to www.allnewdorkingblog.blogspot.com and let me know if it's possible to view it.

ReplyDeleteI got through to your new site and wrote quite a long and hopefully interesting comment as encouragement but when pressing 'send' it asked for a 'profile' and since 'anonymous' did not appear to be one of the options I tried one or two other seemingly irrelevant one before the whole lot disappeared and lost. Even on this site I do not understand the meaning of the list of options and always choose 'anonymous' to overcome the problem although I DO always sign my name so that it does not appear anonymously.
What 'profile' name should I select?

Hi David, really appreciate your help there, i've updated settings so anyone can post anonymously. Go now and you can start adding posts easily! Thanks
