Sadly the Albino squirrel that lived in the church grounds was run over in St Martins Walk car park this afternoon. He/she was buried in the churchyard by the staff from a nearby shop.
I read about this on the local paper's website. Did anyone see how many comments it provoked? Wow, look at all the stories about Dorking - good and bad - in recent times, and this one story about a squirrel has galvanised the town into an outpouring of grief! More so than the three or four dead pedestrians run over in the last couple of years. More than all the shops closing and struggling local businesses. More than the proposed new supermarket that Pepin has posted about. It was a beautiful animal, sure. But get a grip people.
Get over it is only a rat with a tail! I cannot believe that so many people are getting sentimental about a white squirrel which was flattened by a car. The following day (Thursday) the Carphone Warehouse was raided at midday and the crims' got away with £20,000 worth of stock. Sad that a dead squirrel get more web space than another store robbery in the high street at midday, during half term when the weather was very warm. Shows the priorities of people who live in Dorking - bring on the superstore in Curtis Road!!
Dorking had only one white squirrel; I suspect Carphone Warehouse would find £20,000 to be no more than a drop in the ocean.
Surely there is room in the press for all events, major and trivial. Maybe they could be combined into one report to ensure equal coverage:-
"It was reported today that no white squirrels were harmed during a £20,000 midday robbery of Carphone Warehouse on Thursday. No squirrels were available for comment".
I've just seen the funniest thing ever. I was just stuck in traffic down the High Street and I saw a woman in one of the shops putting a mug and a tea-towel in the window with RIP Dorking Squirrel on it.
Oh! What a shame! That squirrel's fame stretched way beyond Dorking.
ReplyDeleteI always thought it was blind!!!
ReplyDeleteWhat a pity.

I'd say it was the driver that was blind - how can you not see a
ReplyDeletebeautiful white squirrel - unless you're blind or driving far too fast!

Sure Alex, get a grip, doesn't this sad event somehow put all our problems into perspective?

The white squirrel was something cute and unique about dorking whereas a jeweller robbery is just about another shop. Shops are boring.
