I am not generally one of the greatest fans of Mole Valley's councillors, but this time they have got something right!
I went along on Tuesday morning at about 11:45 to have a look at the Farmers' Market in South Street, what a surprise. For the first time in a very long time the pavement was crowded to the point where you could not easily walk along it without bumping into people - how very, very, refreshing for Dorking. I asked two or three of the stallholders how it had been for them (there's no point in them coming if they aren't selling stuff) and all replied that it had been an excellent morning.
Ladies and gentlemen at MVDC I will not stop criticising you when I think you've got it totally wrong (remember parking charges?) but when you get it right I am delighted to say congratulations, you've made a good decision.

Yes it was good Pepin BUT there was one mega queue down the High Street...all day long So obviously it was not thought through very well.

I noticed that as well Sonja, but I honestly don't think it was the market (South Street traffic effectively goes into one lane past Junction Road anyway), possibly it was the two lorries further back down the High Street - they really didn't help.

For the short time when I watched the traffic flow, when too many pedestrians were crossing at Waterstones there was a traffic back-up (or down... to Pump Cnr) but more hindrance was created by inept drivers unable to 'read the gaps' between West St. vehicles when wanting to move from High St. into South St. so waiting unnecessarily.
ReplyDeleteHaving heard so many times that SCC Highways and/or Police would not allow markets on the street again, hooray that sense has prevailed (acknowledging that it is a trial only). Hope it's not long before there's some joined up thinking to resuscitate the General Market which needs to move for the same reason as the Farmer's Mkt..
Heard that the market was a huge success! There was a huge turnout of people and the people on the stalls were very pleased how the day turned out. Traffic has always been a huge problem in Dokring day and night. It all comes down to the morons who continually park on single and double yellow lines on the High Street and park opposite lorries unloading their goods to the shops. There has been better enforcement recently but still the idiots park without a care in the world as they turn the High Street effectively into a one way street. It has been said time and time again if the main roads in Dorking (High, South and West Streets) were clear of illegal and dangerous parking, the traffic would flow better in the town. Hope that the market continues in South Street in its new high visability location and the arguments that the traffic was all screwed up does not put the market back down into the car park at the back of St. Martin's Walk. Dorking IS a market town and SHOULD REMAIN a market town.
